Appetito South End

A small local Italian eatery was recently renovated and just reopened near Tremont Street. Located in Boston’s desirable South End, Appetito opened its outdoor patio for the summer and invited guests to try everything on the new contemporary country Italian menu, including pizzas, pastas and risottos.

One summer evening, we visited the small restaurant. We were quickly greeted bythe host and showed to our table. We loved the fact that we didn’t have to ask for water as it seems so many restaurants make their guests do nowadays.

We sampled the proscuitto wrapped zucchini sticks. Tender and meaty, the zucchiniwas fresh and full of flavor. The mushroom and gorgonzola bruschetta was simply amazing.

We also tried the grilled calamari salad with large pieces of juicy squid. The fried fresh mozzarella sandwich, our server told us, tasted like a grilled cheese sandwich. She was right. The sandwich was smothered in cheese and elted to perfection.

The entrees here were equally as good asthe appetizers. The half roasted chicken was deliciously prepared with light seasoning and served withpotatoes. The grilled veal chop with thyme crusted gnocchi was tender and juicy. All the entrees here are uniquely prepared in an open kitchen.

Desserts include, Stone Fruit Crostada,Fresh Fruit Baked Freeform with Rosemary Honey and Vanilla Bean Ice Cream;Chocolate Espresso Semi-Freddo, frozen Italian Custard with Chocolate CoffeeSauce.

General Manager Phil Surette came toAppetito South End from Masa, the adjacent restaurant. Before the extensive renovations, Appetitohad been open for eight years. Executive Chef Philip Aviles came to Boston in 1999 to open Masa and will now work at both restaurants.
