More and more books for younger
readers spill out from publishers and two of the more
intriguing entries are "Backtracked" and "The Red Blazer
"Backtracked" is by Pedro de Alcantara
(Delacorte Press, $15.99, 256 pages ). Alcantara, a
Brazilian musician, shows off his writing skills in this
taut, trim ride taken on the New York City subway of
Tommy Latrella - a ride through the city through time.
It is a perfect book for history buffs ages 12 and up.

Beil (Knopf, $16.99, 299 pages) is focused on Catholic
schoolgirls who go on a scavenger hunt through Manhattan
in a kind of modern day Nancy Drew experience. The hunt
is filled with twists and turns as Beil, who teaches
English in a Catholic High School in Manhattan,
carefully and craftily unfolds this delightful book that
is especially suitable for ages 8-12.
