The super Bowl of Advertising and Other Gridiron Reads

Dr. Harvey Frommer on Sports

Sports Book Review

THAs most sports fans realize - the Super Bowl is not just the crown jewel of sports competition - it is also the ultimate area for advertising dollars. The most watched, the most expensive, the most expensive venue for major league television commercials.  Incredibly, many viewers tune in just to look at the ads.

"The Super Bowl of Advertising" by Bernice Kanner (Bloomberg, $27.95, 240 pages) serves up in pictures and words more than three decades of marketing history. Battles, bloopers, triumphs, inside stories all recounted with style and wit by Ms. Kanner.  Some of the eye catching content includes:

**The fact that a 30-second spot on recent Super Bowls cost more than $2-million. The price keeps going up, too.

**More than 500 articles were written about Super Bowl advertising in 2002.

**A Super Bowl commercial reaches half of America at the same time.

For fans of the NFL, the Super Bowl, marketing and media people - this is an important book getting behind the headlines to clearly explain how marketing became mass entertainment.

"Tyrone Willingham: The Meaning  of Victory" by Fred Mitchell (SportsPublishingLLC, $24.95,  144 pages, color photos throughout) is a celebration and an explanation of the man who was such a sensation his first year as the first black coach in the history of Notre Dame football.  With the able assistance of Fred Mitchell, Willingham recounts his beginnings in North Carolina, his coaching run that saw him at Stanford and in the NFL. His rookie season at Notre Dame is given the in depth treatment. Fine reading for football fans.

"Winning Every Day" by Lou Holz (Harper, $14.00, 216 pages, paper) is a motivational book from the coach who turned around the Notre Dame football program. Holtz, a well known motivational speaker, struts his stuff in this tip filled tome. I especially like his chapter entitled "Every Victory Is Won Before the Game is Played: The Power of Attitude."

Some of the content of "Bloody Sundays" by Mike Freeman (William Morrow/Harper Collins, $24.95,302 pages) has "I've read and heard that before ring." But for those deeply interested in reading about Bill Bellichick's computer like brain, why some new owners seem to be hurting the game, why Jim Brown (in Freeman's opinion) is the best NFL player ever - -this is the book for you. For the rest of us - -optional rewarding.

Over-sized, over-laden with photographs, "The Pictorial History of Football' ( by Roland Lazenby (Thunder Bay Press/Advantage Publishing Group) is a roundup in words and pictures of the gridiron sport. Most of the book's focus is on the professional game and Lazenby divides his content into Early Times, The Young Game Matures 1925-1945, The Golden Age of Pro Football, 1946-1959 and Thoroughly Modern: The NFL From 1960. It's a wonderful book for browsing.
